How To Make Your Child More Creative?

It is every parents desire that their child to be more imaginative. Authorities state that it is up to parents to improve the creative skills of their children. Even though people tend to think that creativity is related with intelligent, and comes naturally by birth, it is a wrong assumption. According to experts, it is possible to improve the creativeness of your child with the right approach and with attention to the education they receive in school. Here are some tips that will help you…

Evolution periods of creativity

The period that creative skills develop most is between 4-6 ages. Every parent should be aware of this period, since these are the ages that children are exploring and processing the environment. They examine the materials and its features, while children at 2-3 ages spend most of their time with colors and doughs.

After they once understand the features of the material, they start to use it. For instance, at this period the drawings consist more shapes but generally it is difficult to understand the meanings of the shapes. However, parents should be very careful about asking the explanation of these drawings, because directly asking “What is that?” can make children feel they are not understood or appreciated.

At this period, children try to be creative and produce. This production is mostly about something they are excited about, something that happened at school for example. Providing materials to children that they can express themselves encourages them. At this point, parents should also pay attention if school provides such materials as well.

Activities that will increase creativity

For these activities, parents need to provide some materials to the kids, but, joint characteristic of these materials is that they don’t have single way of use. Children should be able to use these materials however they want. This provides the confidence child needs to be imaginative without worrying. Some of these materials are;

Watercolor and finger color: They reduce stress and increase imagination. They are chosen for the reason that bright colors cherish child’s feelings.

Collage: This technique brings different materials together; sponge, wrapping paper, see shelves, ribbons, whatever you can thing of. Imagination of child increases within the process of choosing the materials and combining them together to create a composition. Since it is a technique that needs patience, younger kids would spend less time doing it compare to school kids.

Doughs: They provide children to create 3D compositions. Actions like squeezing and dividing it allows children to express their aggression without any harm.

Sewing and repairing: these activities are surely for older children, since dangerous materials are involved. They improve hand-eye coordination and creativity. However, they always needed to be done under an adults watch.

What should parents be careful about?

When trying to increase imagination of child, parents should provide materials and suitable circumstances but never force them. Instead of asking them to do something, it is better to watch what they are doing. Parents should allow them, for instance, to draw a house the way they see it, not the way we think it is right. If children are responded gently and feel that their thoughts are appreciated, number of these creative thoughts will increase. Teacher’s approach at school also should be paid attention. If parents observe that their child is compared to his/her classmates or criticized harshly by their teacher, it may mean that something is wrong.

Moreover, creative children commonly have characteristics such as stubbornness, finding faults and being unsatisfied most of the time. Even though they might give parents some difficulties, these attitudes should never be suppressed, since child needs to, for instance, be stubborn to defend an original work, or needs to find faults to create a better version of it. On the other side, creative children have skills such as determination, curiosity, insight, sense of humor, being able to take risks, which they also would help them in school and make them stand out among their classmates.
